asked the Minister of Technology what detergents were used to dissipate the crude oil from the "Torrey Canyon"; which of them have persistent qualities; and what will be the effect of them on the natural life in the parts of the sea where they were used.

Several detergents have been used. At sea they dilute and cause no real damage to marine life. They are likely to destroy plants and animals living on beaches and for a short distance below low water mark.
