HC Deb 11 April 1967 vol 744 cc158-9W
60. Mr. Chapman

asked the Secretary of State for Commonwealth Affairs which functions of the British Council will come to an end in Jamaica and Barbados as a result of the withdrawal of Government grants, and which are being continued by the High Commissioner in Jamaica.

Mr. Bowden

All functions of the British Council in Jamaica have come to an end except those which will be continued by our High Commission. These continuing functions include advice and help to Commonwealth Scholars and Bursars, and to the volunteers serving in Jamaica under the British Volunteer Programme; the maintenance of the speech record library; and the answering of general educational inquiries.

The activities of the British Council in Barbados have always been on a very small scale and have now ceased.
