HC Deb 04 April 1967 vol 744 c29W
Mr. Bruce-Gardyne

asked the Minister of Labour what was the unemployment percentage in Scotland at the height of the last recession in February, 1963; and if he will adjust the current figure to take account of migration out of Scotland between 1963 and 1966.

Mr. Fernyhough

The percentage rate of unemployment in Scotland in February, 1963 was 6.2. In March, 1967 the provisional rate was 4.0. It is not possible to adjust this latter rate to take account of migration out of Scotland between 1963 and 1966.

Mr. Bruce-Gardyne

asked the Minister of Labour what was the percentage of male unemployment in Scotland in February, 1963 at the height of the last recession, and the current figure adjusted to take account of net emigration from Scotland between 1963 and 1966 and the higher activity rates for males prevailing in 1963.

Mr. Fernyhough

The percentage rate of unemployment among males in Scotland in February, 1963 was 7.5. In March, 1967 the provisional rate was 4.7. I regret that it is not practicable to adjust the latter figure as requested by the hon. Member.
