HC Deb 04 April 1967 vol 744 cc37-8W
Sir C. Taylor

asked the Minister of Social Security at what level of earnings will a retirement pensioner suffer a higher deduction under the proposed new earnings level than at present.

Miss Herbison

No retirement pensioner will have a higher reduction from

his pension than at present solely on account of the proposed new earnings limit. A relatively small number who have substantial income in addition to their retirement pension and earnings, and whose tax affairs are arranged to give them the maximum advantage from the present system, may find that they will suffer higher deductions than at present because their earnings will in future be treated on the same basis as those of other pensioners. It is not possible to estimate at what level of earnings and other income this may occur, because it depends on the individual's tax liability and the way that tax is paid.
