HC Deb 04 April 1967 vol 744 c25W
Mr. Powell

asked the Secretary of State for Defence if he will state the number of adult private soldiers to each brigadier serving in the Army on dates for which this figure is conveniently available before and during World War II and during the past decade, and also on 31st December, 1966.

Mr. Boyden

The figures are as follows:

Private Soldiers
1936 1,596
1944 2,073
1957 586
1962 323
31st December, 1966 285

NOTE.—1. In 1936 there was no rank of Brigadier, hut 91 Colonels held Brigadier/Brigadier General appointments.

2. The figures for 1936 and 1944 include Lance Corporals because Lance Corporal was then an appointment, not a rank.
