Mr. Fortescue

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the total sum held as sterling balances in this country by other Governments; and how this is divided between the holders.

Mr. Callaghan

The external sterling holdings with U.K. banks of central monetary institutions in overseas countries were £2,392 million at the end of June, 1966; of which £1,879 million related to overseas sterling area countries and £513 million to non-sterling area countries. Figures for Government holdings as such and for the holdings of individual countries cannot be provided.
