HC Deb 19 October 1966 vol 734 cc58-9W
Sir R. Russell

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if he will give an account of the work of the Committee on Housing, Building and Planning, of the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations, and its achievements.

Mrs. White

The United Nations Committee on Housing, Building and Planning was established as a subsidiary organ of the United Nations Economic and Social Council in 1962.

The terms of reference of the Committee charge it with examining technical assistance in the housing field; making recommendations to the Economic and Social Council for the co-ordination of United Nations housing activities, and through the Council to governments; and promoting research and the exchange of information with special reference to the needs of the developing countries.

The Committee is essentially advisory and member States are normally represented by experts. The Committee's reports are submitted to the Economic and Social Council through the United Nations Commission for Social Development. Copies are available in the Library of the House.
