HL Deb 18 October 1966 vol 277 cc63-4WA
LORD NAPIER

asked Her Majesty's Government:

  1. (a) when they intend to approve an increase in the rate of motor mileage allowance (presently 7¾d. per mile) paid to members of Her Majesty's Civil Service who use their private motor cars on official Government duties, as a result of the further 10 per cent. increase in the cost of petrol, etc., to the consumer;
  2. 64
  3. (b) whether they will undertake to backdate any increased rate to 20th July, 1966, and not allow a period of over six months to elapse, and then fail to backdate, as they did in 1964–65, thereby unfairly penalising the civil servants.

LORD SHEPHERD

The rates of mileage allowance payable to civil servants are governed by agreements of the National Whitley Council, and are determined by reference to the overall costs of motoring. No claim is currently under consideration. The second part of the Question does not therefore arise.
