§ Sir R. Russellasked the Minister of Transport what is her programme for improving the Al between Newcastle and Edinburgh, in view of the fact that much of it consists of two-lane single carriageway.
§ Mr. SwinglerA number of road improvements to the A1 north of Newcastle are programmed for the years up to 1969–70, including by-passes at Wide-open, Seaton Burn, Morpeth and Alnwick. Traffic volumes north of the 37W junction with A697 do not at present justify dual carriageways, but the need for further improvement of the route between Newcastle and Berwick is being examined as part of the present studies of inter-urban trunk routes for the period after 1970. The Secretary of State for Scotland is giving similar consideration to the route between Berwick and Edinburgh where several improvements are being made.
