HC Deb 24 November 1966 vol 736 cc350-1W
48. Mr. Leadbitter

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what was the total number of resignations from the police force in each of the years 1960 to 1966; and what further steps he is taking to improve recruitment.

Mr. Roy Jenkins

For the years 1960–65 resignations of policemen from forces in England and Wales totalled 2,616, 1,691, 1,804, 1,707, 2,166 and 2,119. The total for the first nine months of this year was 2,301. These figures do not include ordinary retirements, deaths, dismissals, secondments or transfers.

A vigorous recruitment campaign is in progress, in supplementation of local efforts, and recruitment remains at a record level.
