HC Deb 09 November 1966 vol 735 cc307-8W
Mr. Evelyn King

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department on how many occasions and on what dates Robert Maxwell has been medically examined since he became a Borstal Prison inmate; and on which of those dates he was first held to be mentally abnormal.

Mr. Roy Jenkins

Since his borstal sentence on 7th May, 1965, Maxwell has had many medical examinations, mostly routine. He was psychologically assessed in May, 1965, at the borstal allocation centre. After being charged with murder, he was under close observation in the hospitals at Dorchester and Winchester prisons from 26th November, 1965, to 22nd March, 1966, and was examined on several occasions by psychiatrists. The medical examination made at Maidstone before the adjudication by the Board of Visitors did not include a psychiatric examination. He was diagnosed as a psychopath when re-examined at Wormwood Scrubs in September-October, 1966.
