HC Deb 02 November 1966 vol 735 c100W
78. Mr. David Steel

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how much has been spent in recent years on the scientific study of methods of detecting crime in Scotland by the Scottish Home Department and by other sources of which he has official information, respectively.

Mr. Ross

My Department does not undertake research of this kind but it has access to the studies undertaken by the Home Office Research and Planning Branch.

79. Mr. David Steel

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how much has been spent in recent years on the scientific study of the causes of crime in Scotland by the Scottish Home Department and by other sources, such as the universities, of which he has official information, respectively.

Mr. Ross

Criminological research is carried out on behalf of the Department by a research unit based on the Home Office; the Department's expenditure in the current financial year is estimated at £6,000. Departmental expenditure on financing work in the Scottish universities is estimated at £9,000. I cannot put a figure on the cost of university work not so financed but it may be about as much again. Expenditure has increased over recent years as suitable staff have been obtained.
