HC Deb 02 November 1966 vol 735 cc94-5W
Mr. Buchanan-Smith

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food why the present importation of Charolais cattle is being delayed; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. John Mackie

This importation is delayed because of difficulty in reaching agreement on an additional test we require to detect the presence of any foot-and-mouth disease virus in apparently healthy animals. Recent experience at the Animal Virus Research Institute at Pirbright has shown that this test may reveal carriers which cannot be detected in any other way.
