HC Deb 25 May 1966 vol 729 c108W
Mr. Miscampbell

asked the Minister of Transport (1) on the basis of other motorway experience and present traffic volume, what is the estimated number of persons killed and injured each year whose deaths and injuries would be prevented by the provision of a Broughton to Blackpool motorway link;

(2) if she will give the numbers of killed and injured persons in each of the last five years on the Garstang—Blackpool A586 road and on the Preston—Blackpool A583 road.

Mr. Swingler

The accident details for the last five years are as follows:

A586 Fatal Injured (including slight) A586 Fatal Injured (including slight)
1961 3 57 6 101
1962 Nil 72 8 144
1963 3 62 10 117
1964 5 97 3 175
1965 8 87 2 180

The local authorities concerned have estimated that the transfer of traffic to a new Blackpool motorway link might result in a net reduction, in 1970, of about 500 accidents, in which 18 persons would have been killed. This estimate is based on an analysis of the traffic on all the roads which the local authorities consider likely to be affected by the Blackpool link and not only on the A586 and A583.
