HC Deb 19 May 1966 vol 728 c304W
Mr. Garrett

asked the Minister of Transport what are the future plans for the east coast motorway between Newcastle and Edinburgh.

Mr. Swingler

There are no plans for such a motorway.

By-passes at Wideopen, Seaton Burn, Morpeth and Alnwick, as well as a number of smaller schemes on Al north of Newcastle, are included in the current five-year programme. The need for further improvement of the route between Newcastle and Berwick is being examined as part of my right hon. Friend's present studies of inter-urban trunk routes for the period after 1970. Similar consideration to the route between Berwick and Edinburgh is being given by the Secretary of State for Scotland.
