Mr. Robert Edwardsasked the President of the Board of Trade what representations and communications he has received from the Co-operative movement and the distributive trades in connection with the effects of his pay roll tax on the price of retail goods and services; and what replies he has sent.
§ Mr. DarlingI have received a number of representations, both direct and through hon. Members, from such bodies that the effect of the tax will be to put up prices. In reply, I have explained or shall be explaining further the reasons for the imposition of the tax as set out in the White Paper and amplified during the Budget Debate.
