HC Deb 09 May 1966 vol 728 cc33-4W
Mr. Gower

asked the Secretary of State for Wales if he will state, giving the mileage in respect of each, those motorways or lengths of motorway for which no line had yet been proposed, a draft scheme had been published, a scheme had been made, tenders had been invited, a contract had been placed, which were under construction, and which were in use, respectively, as at 30th April.

Mr. Cledwyn Hughes

The following lengths of motorway were under construction for completion this year:

M4 Newport By-Pass 6.7 miles
M4 Coldra Crick 9.1 miles
M4 Crick—Newhouse 2.75 miles
A48 (M) Port Talbot By-Pass 4.4 miles

1.5 miles of one lane of the Port Talbot By-Pass was opened to west-bound traffic on the 15th December 1965.

There were no lengths of motorway at any of the other stages mentioned.

The table excludes the section of M4 from Newhouse to the Monmouthshire/Gloucestershire boundary, a distance of 0.9 miles, which remains the responsibility of my right hon. Friend the Minister of Transport.
