HC Deb 04 May 1966 vol 727 cc108-9W
63. Mr. Lomas

asked the Minister of Transport if she will introduce legislation for the compulsory registration of driving instructors, in the interest of road safety.

89. Mr. Braine

asked the Minister of Transport whether, in view of the need for higher standards of driving on the roads, she will take steps to reform and regulate the present methods of giving driving instruction.

Mrs. Castle

The National Road Safety Advisory Council has recently advised me to make the registration of professional driving instructors compulsory. Discussions about this are being undertaken with the interests concerned; they will be carried forward as quickly as possible. In the meantime I cannot give any undertaking about the introduction of legislation. I have, however, decided to enlarge the scope of the register by admitting part-time instructors to it.
