HC Deb 04 May 1966 vol 727 c117W
79. Mr. John Wells

asked the Minister of Transport what steps are being taken to improve the Maidstone–Chatham road, A229, and the Maidstone to Chatham road via Bredhurst; when a vehicle census was last taken on these roads; and how many vehicles use them daily.

Mr. Swingler

The Kent County Council is preparing the scheme already programmed for A229 between Bluebell Hill and Sandling. It is studying the possible improvement of the road via Bredhurst at Dunn Street. The Chatham Borough Council expects to start the junction improvement with A229 at Shirley Avenue soon.

Vehicle censuses were last taken on the A229 in December, 1965, and on the road via Bredhurst in January, 1965. The average total traffic then was 20,000 and 1,550 vehicles respectively.
