HC Deb 09 March 1966 vol 725 cc522-3W
66. Mr. Chichester-Clark

asked the Secretary of State for Defence how many drill halls and similar accommodation are owned and used by the Territorial Army Association in Northern Ireland.

Mr. Reynolds

The Associations in Northern Ireland use 31 drill halls for the Territorial Army, and four drill halls and nine huts are used for the Army Cadet Force. The Associations own 28 of the drill halls and five of the huts.

Mr. Currie

asked the Secretary of State for Defence whether, in view of the strategic position of Northern Ireland for the protection of the Western Approaches, and of the qualities demonstrated by officers and men of Ulster regiments, he will now authorise the retention of a strong Territorial Army in Northern Ireland.

Mr. Reynolds

Northern Ireland will have a greater share of the Army Volunteer Reserve than it does of the Territorial Army. The distribution of units of the Home Defence Force is still under discussion.
