HC Deb 09 March 1966 vol 725 c589W
Mr. Carold Johnson

asked the Minister of Land and Natural Resources whether he has now considered the minute of the Buxton Conference on Roads and Traffic in National Parks recently sent to him by the Friends of the Lake District; and what reply he has sent.

Mr. Willey

The minute to which the hon. Member refers has been considered in consultation with the other Departments concerned. It has been acknowledged in the following terms:

"Roads and Traffic in National Parks

Thank you for your letter of 25th January.

We are grateful for the copies of the Minute of the Conference held at Buxton on 30th October last and have found them most interesting.

We have noted the terms of the resolution passed at the Conference which was supported by the organisations shown in the list attached to your letter."

The hon. Member will be aware of the proposals in the White Paper "Leisure in the Countryside", for bringing up to date the powers to control traffic in National Parks and other designated areas. These will provide an effective means of easing traffic difficulties and retaining unimpaired the heritage of natural beauty which the Parks were set up to preserve.
