asked the Secretary of State for Defence, how many retired and pensioned members of the three armed Services are not in receipt of National Insurance retirement pensions because they were too old to be able to contribute or are now under the age of 65 years; how many of these are officers; and how many are warrant officers, ratings and other ranks.

The Service Departments do not maintain detailed records of entitlement to a benefit which they do not administer. However, on the basis of age, we estimate that there are rather more than 10,000 retired members
