Mr. Longden

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many industrial and non-industrial civil servants, respectively, excluding employees of the Post Office, there were at the end of 1951, 1964 and 1965.

In August, 1954, the Atomic Energy Department (approximately 7.2 thousand non-industrial and 107 thousand industrial staff) became the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority and its staff ceased to be counted as civil servants. In April, 1965, the Forestry Commission (approximately 2.9 thousand non-industrial and 10.9 thousand industrial staff) as a grant aided body, was also excluded.

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the number of civil servants currently employed in the Management, Services, Group of the Treasury; and what was the equivalent number on 15th October, 1964.

80; and 64 in October, 1964. Both figures exclude supporting clerical and typing staff.
