§ Q18. Mrs. Thatcherasked the Prime Minister what representations he made during his recent visit to Moscow about Mr. Gerald Brooke; and what further steps he will take to secure an improvement in treatment and an early release.
§ The Prime MinisterI urged the Soviet Government to consider extending clemency to Mr. Brooke. They declined to do so except on conditions which are unacceptable for Her Majesty's Government. The Embassy in Moscow has subsequently asked the Soviet Government to allow additional food parcels to be sent to Mr. Brooke and has requested that 483W every step be taken which might be necessary to see that he comes to no harm. Her Majesty's Consul was allowed to take food and cigarettes to him when she saw him on 4th March. I shall not let this matter drop.
