§ 4. Mr. Brewisasked the Secretary of State for Scotland why emigration from Scotland increased in 1965 and resulted in a drop in the population of Scotland for the first time since 1951.
§ Mr. RossThe latest available estimate of net emigration is for the year 30th June 1964, to 30th June, 1965. In that year, migration to the rest of the United Kingdom has reduced, but there was a continuation of the trend in recent years of rising emigration overseas. The fall in population at mid-1965 also reflected a reduction in the number of births, and an increase in the number of deaths. The population of Scotland also fell between 1951 and 1952 and between 1952 and 1953.
