HC Deb 14 June 1966 vol 729 cc250-1W
Mr. Biggs-Davison

asked the Secretary of State for Commonwealth Relations for what reasons and on what date it was decided to move Commonwealth Day; and what was done to make the change known to the public.

Mrs. Hart

It was felt that it would be more appropriate in the context of the modern Commonwealth that in future Commonwealth Day should be celebrated in this country on Her Majesty's Official Birthday instead of on 24th May, the date of Queen Victoria's birth.

The announcement of the change of date was made on 24th January, 1966, and was widely published in the press. All the appropriate educational authorities and unofficial bodies were also informed.
