HC Deb 28 July 1966 vol 732 cc320-1W
65. Mr. Gresham Cooke

asked the First Secretary of State and Secretary of State for Economic Affairs if there has been an increase of the productivity of the nation as a whole, taking into account the gross domestic product at factor cost, constant 1958 prices, seasonally adjusted compared with the total in civil employment, for Great Britain for the fourth quarters of 1964 and 1965.

Mr. Albu

Yes. It is estimated that in the fourth quarter of 1965 output per head was about 1¼ per cent. higher than a year earlier.

Mr. Gresham Cooke

asked the First Secretary of State and Secretary of State for Economic Affairs what increase in productivity there has been in production industries for the first quarter of 1966 as compared with the same period of 1965, taking into account the index of industrial production as compared with employment in index of production industries.

Mr. Albu

About 1 per cent.; but in manufacturing alone there was an increase of 2 per cent. in output per head, and, allowing for a reduction of 2 per cent. in hours worked by operatives, an increase of about 4 per cent. in output per manhour.
