asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government what was the cost to the Exchequer of operating the planning appeal machinery in the last convenient 12-monthly period.

The cost to central Government Departments was £1,150,000 for the 12 months ended 1st July. £1,117,000 of this was incurred in my Department, representing an average of £80 for each appeal received.
