HC Deb 22 July 1966 vol 732 cc162-3W
Mr. Barnett

asked the President of the Board of Trade what is the number of members of the Monopolies Commission; how this compares with the position before the recent Monopolies Bill received the Royal Assent; how many, and which industries, are at present being investigated; and how this compares with the previous position.

Mr. Jay

There are at present 18 members of the Monopolies Commission, compared with 9 at the beginning of August, 1965.

The Commission is at present conducting seven monopoly investigations, as follows:

  • Cinema films.
  • Flat glass.
  • Rayon and other cellulosic fibres.
  • Aluminium semi-manufactures.
  • Electric lamps.
  • Infant milk foods.
  • International motor insurance cards.

In addition, as I have already announced, I propose to refer beer and estate agents' charges to the Commission. The Commission also now has the responsibility for examining mergers.

At the beginning of August, 1965, the Commission was dealing with following seven references:

  • Household detergents.
  • Colour film.
  • Cinema films.
  • Flat glass.
  • Rayon and other cellulosic fibres.
  • Aluminium semi-manufactures.
  • Electrical wiring harnesses for motor vehicles.
