HC Deb 22 July 1966 vol 732 cc153-4W
Mr. Beaney

asked the Secretary of State for Defence how many military bands there are in Her Majesty's forces; what is their total complement; what was the cost of maintaining and servicing such bands, in the latest convenient year: how many military bands are now abroad with their regiments or battalions; how many are under direction to go abroad by the end of this year; and if he will make a statement on the present and future policy of maintaining military bands.

Mr. Reynolds

There are 124 established bands in the Regular Forces and 140 in the Territorial Army; their complement is 4,500 and 3,885, and their annual cost in 1965–66 about £6–5 million and £1 million respectively. Fifty-two regular bands are at present abroad, and 9 are due to go before December, 1966. My right hon. Friend recognises that bands are an integral part of service life and a valuable link with the public.
