HC Deb 21 July 1966 vol 732 cc128-9W
62. Commander Pursey

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what is the total sum expected to be received this year for fees at the Royal Hospital School, Holbrook; and what are the amounts from the Naval Education Allowance, local education authorities, and from ratings' widows for the education of their orphan sons, respectively.

Mr. J. P. W. Mallalieu

The total sum expected to be received this financial year for fees at the Royal Hospital School is £74,000. Of this sum it is probable that some £38,000 will be paid by serving officers and ratings eligible to claim Navy Education Allowance; local education authority grants to parents are likely to total £17,000. Parental contributions are estimated to amount to about £19,000 including £570 for the sons of dead ratings.

63. Commander Pursey

asked the Secretary of State for Defence whether a rating's orphan at the Royal Hospital School, Holbrook, retains his entitlement to benefit from Greenwich Hospital and any reduction of fees, on the remarriage of his mother, as do orphans of war widows, under the War Pensions Scheme.

Mr. J. P. W. Mallalieu

There is no statutory entitlement to any particular level of benefit from Greenwich Hospital. All cases are considered individually and it is our policy that there should be no hardship.

Commander Pursey

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what was the total number of applications for the September term at the Royal Hospital School, Holbrook, the number who were the sons of direct-entry officers, commissioned officers from the lower deck, ratings and ratings' widows, respectively, the number of acceptances and rejections in each of these four categories, and the reasons.

Mr. J. P. W. Mallalieu

One hundred and thirty-seven applications were registered.

Of these, 23 failed to attain the standard of entry on educational or medical grounds. None was an orphan.

Of the remainder, 12 were from direct entry officers and 7 were accepted; 22 were from officers commissioned from the lower deck and 20 were accepted; 72 were from ratings and 49 were accepted.

Eight applications on behalf of orphans were received. All were accepted. Six were the sons of ratings; one the son of an officer commissioned from the lower deck; and one the son of a direct entry officer.
