HC Deb 21 July 1966 vol 732 c143W
Mr. Raphael Tuck

asked the Minister of Transport (1) if she will make a statement in the accident in the north orbital road outside St. Michael's School, Watford, on 14th July, in which one child was killed and two other children were critically injured;

(2) whether she is aware that the fatal accident to a child outside St. Michael's School, Watford, on 14th July is not the first, and that, although the 40 miles per hour speed limit starts by the school, motor vehicles go along that stretch of road at 60 and 70 miles per hour; and whether-, in view of the danger to children crossing that road, she will make provision for an underpass or traffic signals, so as to obviate the risk of further such accidents.

Mr. Swingler

This sad accident is now being investigated by the police and we are unable to comment in the meantime. An earlier fatal accident occurred in 1963. Enforcement of the speed restriction is a matter for the police. My right hon. Friend proposes to provide a pedestrian subway as part of roadworks to be started next year.
