HC Deb 20 July 1966 vol 732 c95W
74. Mr. Tilney

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what liaison he has established with other countries to look into the causes of hurricanes and the action that can be taken to lessen damage caused by them.

Mr. Merlyn Rees

The Meteorological Office keeps in touch with other countries on hurricane research. There is, for example, liaison with the Hong Kong Meteorological Service and also with the United States National Hurricane Research Laboratory and other American weather agencies. Shortly cloud photographs will he received direct at Muharraq, Gan and Singapore from U.S. weather satellites: these will help to provide warning of hurricanes in the Indian Ocean and Far East areas. The Meteorological Office also participated in a recent N.A.T.O. conference on cloud dynamics at which the problem of hurricanes was discussed.
