HC Deb 19 July 1966 vol 732 cc73-4W
Mr. Winterbottom

asked the President of the Board of Trade what progress he has made towards the development of the Crystal Palace site as a national exhibition centre.

Mr. Jay

After discussion with the Greater London Council and the Confederation of British Industries, the Government have decided to support and participate in a scheme for the establishment of an Exhibition Centre by the Greater London Council on the Crystal Palace site. Because, however, of the need to maintain restraint on public expenditure, the date for starting construction remains to be determined, and will not be earlier than 1968. Discussions with the Greater London Council will be pursued meanwhile and, subject to agreement with them on final arrangements for the project, a starting date for the scheme will be settled in the light of economic and financial conditions.
