HC Deb 18 July 1966 vol 732 cc17-8W
Mr. Maclennan

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he proposes to adjust sick pay in the Civil Service and other public services when the new earnings-related sickness benefit starts in the autumn under the National Insurance Act 1966.

Mr. Callaghan

Yes. It is proposed to follow in general the arrangements adopted for the present fiat-rate sickness benefit so as to ensure that sick pay in the Civil Service, when added to sickness or injury benefit under the National Insurance Acts, does not exceed ordinary pay.

The Government desire to see similar arrangements introduced generally. As regards the police, and employees in the National Health Service, nationalised industries, local authorities and other public services, discussions will be taking place as appropriate with employers and with representatives of staff.
