§ Mr. Goronwy RobertsExcluding capital expenditure, the Medical Research Council expects to spend approximately £1.27 million specifically on cancer research in 1966–67, but it is not possible to estimate the amount of Exchequer funds derived from grants given on the advice of the University Grants Committee to universities and medical schools which is devoted to cancer research, or the amount spent by hospitals within the National Health Service. Moreover much basic research which is financed by the Medical Research Council and universities may have an important bearing on the problems of the disease.
154WCurrent figures for voluntary organisations are not available. The British Empire Cancer Campaign approved the expenditure of £1,459,284 on research and related activities in 1965. The Imperial Cancer Research Fund allocated £1,725,000 to research, related capital projects and endowment in 1964–65. The total expenditure from other voluntary sources cannot be reliably estimated.
