asked the Minister of Health whether he has accepted the recommendations of the Report of the Working Party on Irradiation of Food; and if he will make a statement.

My right hon. Friends the Secretary of State for Scotland and the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and I have accepted the recommendations set out in the Report of the Working Party on Irradiation of Food and propose, after consultation with trade and other organisations representative of interested parties, to introduce regulations under the Food and Drugs Acts to prohibit the irradiation of food and food products intended for human consumption, and the sale in this country of food which has been irradiated.

When the regulations are made a scrutinising body will be set up to advise the Ministers concerned on applications for exemptions from the prohibition. The proposed membership and terms of reference of the body will be announced in due course.
