asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will call for a report from the Commissioner of Police for the Metropolis on the establishment for school crossing patrol attendants in Greater London and the number of attendants employed at the present time; and if he is satisfied that the conditions of work and rate of pay are capable of attracting the requisite number of suitable applicants.

The number of school crossing for which patrols are authorised is 1,755. 1,341 patrols are at present employed. The conditions of work are in are main dictated by the nature of the job, but the recent pay rise, coupled with an advertising campaign, has resulted in increased recruitment.
