HC Deb 21 February 1966 vol 725 cc25-6W
Sir C. Osborne

asked the Minister of Transport (1) why her proposal to close the Grimsby-Louth line for passenger traffic was sent only to the postal authorities, and not to the local government authorities who are unanimously against the closing of this line; why her predecessor's decision not to close this line has been altered; and if she will make a statement;

(2) what information she has about the estimated loss per annum on the Grimsby-Louth-Firsby line and how much more passenger and freight would be required to meet this deficit; why further operational savings cannot be made; and, in view of local opposition to the closing of this line, if she will receive a deputation before a final decision is reached.

Mrs. Castle

The hon. Member is under a misapprehension.

Proposals for closing rail passenger services are made by the Railways Board and not by me. Freight operation is a matter entirely for the Board.

My predecessor asked the Board to revise their proposals for closing passenger services in East Lincolnshire. I understand that the Board's re-examination has involved certain local enquiries, including those made to postal authorities.

Until I receive the revised proposals I do not know what the operational or financial implications may be.

I am always willing to receive hon. Members about closure proposals affecting their constituents.
