HC Deb 21 February 1966 vol 725 cc21-2W
Mr. Kershaw

asked the Minister of Transport what proposals she has to make the crossroads at Cambridge on A.38 safer for pedestrians; whether she is aware that a footbridge is unsuitable for elderly people and for perambulators; and what further proposals for a central sanctuary she has.

Mrs. Castle

My engineers consider that a central refuge would not be satisfactory. They are discussing the provision of a footbridge with ramps for elderly people and perambulators, with the Gloucestershire County Council, the agent authority.

Mr. Kershaw

asked the Minister of Transport whether she is aware that the stretch of A.38 between Cambridge and Gossington Bridge is exceptionally dangerous; how many accidents, fatal and otherwise, there have been on this stretch of road in each of the last five calendar years; and what further proposals she has for improving the safety of this road.

Mr. John Morris

Accidents recorded for the past five years between north of Cambridge and Gossington Bridge are:

1961 1962 1963 1964 1965
Fatal 3 1
Other 48 33 25 22 26

This stretch of road is not exceptionally dangerous. Further road improvements cannot command a high priority. To help pedestrians my right hon. Friend is prepared to provide a footbridge in Cambridge.
