Lord Balnielasked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he will place in the Library a copy of the communication received from the Sudan Government announcing their decision to break off diplomatic relations with the United Kingdom Government; and whether he will make a statement about the present position.
§ Mr. PadleyThe Sudan Government formally announced their decision to break diplomatic relations with Her Majesty's Government in anaide memoire dated 18th December last which was handed to our Ambassador in Khartoum. A copy of this aide memoire has been placed in the Library.
The United States Government have agreed to act as the Power protecting our interests in the Sudan. Arrangements are being made for the maintenance of consular, commercial and cultural relations on a reciprocal basis.
