HC Deb 09 February 1966 vol 724 c70W
102. Mr. Doig

asked the Minister of Transport what the result of changing to one-way street systems has been in relation to accidents and the time taken to get from point A to point B, as distinct from the speed of the vehicles.

Mr. John Morris

There are no figures to show for the country as a whole the benefits brought about by one-way traffic schemes. But figures for eleven London schemes show that, on average, fatal and serious injury accidents have been reduced by 13 per cent., slight injury accidents by 20 per cent.; accidents to pedestrians have decreased by 35 per cent. Journey times have also been substantially reduced. Over the roads included in six London schemes there has been a reduction in average journey times of 28 per cent. in off-peak periods and of 26 per cent. in peak hours.
