HC Deb 09 February 1966 vol 724 cc97-8W
157. Mr. Buchanan-Smith

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what types of leptospirosis have been identified in British cattle; what estimate has been made of the economic and other losses caused by this disease; and whether the Charolais cattle recently rejected were carriers of the same type of leptospirosis as is found in Great Britain.

Mr. Peart

Only one serotype of leptospira organism has been isolated in British cattle—L. icterohaemorrhagiae. This serotype has caused illness in calves in this country but only very few cases have been reported. Of the 35 Charolais cattle rejected, one showed reaction to the test for L. icterohaemorrhagiae.
