HC Deb 02 February 1966 vol 723 cc247-8W
Dr. Summerskill

asked the President of the Board of Trade what consideration he has given to the imposition of a ban, similar to that imposed under the Importation of Plumage (Prohibition) Act 1921, on the importation into this country of furs derived from animals which have been caught in traps, the use of which in this country would be illegal on grounds of cruelty.

Mr. Jay

None. The Board do not use their powers under the Import, Export and Customs Powers (Defence) Act, 1939, to impose fresh import controls for other than economic or commercial purposes. Legislation to control imports for the sort of purpose suggested by the hon. Member is normally introduced by Private Member's Bill.
