HC Deb 02 February 1966 vol 723 cc255-6W
Mr. Lubbock

asked the Minister of Pensions and National Insurance what is the estimated cost of allowances for children in 1965–66 paid under the National Insurance scheme and the National Assistance scheme.

Mr. Pentland

The estimated cost under the National Insurance and Industrial Injuries schemes is £50 million. A similar estimate for the National Assistance scheme cannot be given as it is not possible to isolate the amount of assistance paid in respect of children. Assistance allowances are granted to cover the needs of the recipient and his dependants, and accordingly in cases where there are children the assessment has regard not only to any family allowance or insurance benefit in payment but also to other forms of income possessed by the recipient and his dependants.
