HC Deb 21 December 1966 vol 738 cc364-5W
Mr. Harold Walker

asked the Minister of Labour when the Government (1) training centre at Denton, Lancashire, was closed down; and for what reason;

(2) how many persons are currently receiving training at the Government training centre at Denton, Lancashire; and how this figure compares with the average for the last 10 years;

(3) how many of those persons trained for engineering work at the Government training centre at Denton, Lancashire, have been subequently placed in employment in the engineering industry during the last 12-month period for which figures are available.

Mr. Gunter

The Government training centre at Denton (Manchester) was closed down in 1957 because of reduced demand for training. It re-opened in July, 1966. On 14th November, 1966, 46 people were in training. As there was no training in Denton between 1957 and July, 1966 it is not possible to provide an average for the last ten years. Because of the opposition of the Manchester District A.E.U., only one engineering class is planned for Denton, in electric welding, and this opened on 12th December.
