HC Deb 21 December 1966 vol 738 cc330-1W
Mr. Peter Walker

asked the Minister of Transport when she will announce her estimate of expenditure on new road construction and major improvements on a year by year basis from 1967–68 to 1970–71.

Mr. Swingler

Figures for 1967–68 will appear in the printed Civil Estimates and my right hon. Friend hopes before very long to make an announcement about expenditure during a further period of years. Following previous practice she does not propose to announce individual estimates of expenditure for intervening years.

Mr. Berry

asked the Minister of Transport if she will give details of the reductions made in estimates for road expenditure in Greater London for the years 1967–68 and 1968–69, respectively, showing separately new construction with major improvement, and maintenance with minor improvement, as a result of the House of Commons Paper 252 of 1966–67 on Local Government Finance (England and Wales) published on 15th December, 1966.

Mrs. Castle

The figures given in Appendix A of the White Paper for relevant expenditure on highways, road lighting and road safety are 12.1 per cent. lower than the corresponding estimates submitted by local authorities generally for 1967–68 and 10.6 per cent. lower for 1968–69.

These figures are calculated as aggregates and are not attributable to individual authorities. They make full provision for carrying out local authorities' road programmes previously approved.
