HC Deb 12 December 1966 vol 738 cc15-6W
Mr. Urwin

asked the Minister of Public Building and Works what reply he has given to the representations recently made to him by trade unions and employers in the stone masonry industry regarding the increasing use of natural stone in building construction; what is his policy on the future role of stone; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Boyden

I told both sides of the industry that the Department could not discriminate in favour of a particular building material but that in the national interest the use of economic materials produced by modern methods should be encouraged.

Stone has a distinctive rôle to play in the British building industry and I very much hope that both public and private clients will use it wherever it is appropriate.
