HC Deb 08 December 1966 vol 737 cc351-2W
Mr. Lomas

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will list those local authorities which at the latest date have a full-time liaison officer to deal with immigration problems.

Mr. Roy Jenkins

Under the White Paper, Immigration from the Commonwealth (Cmnd. 2739), voluntary liaison committees may receive grant from the National Committee for Commonwealth Immigrants and supplementary support from local authorities towards the cost of employing full-time officers. The following committees have so far made appointments:

  • Camden Committee for Community Relations.
  • Council of Citizens of Tower Hamlets.
  • Ealing International Friendship Council.
  • Hackney Citizens Liaison Council.
  • Leicester Commonwealth Citizens Consultative Committee.
  • Manchester Committee for Community Relations.
  • 352
  • Nottingham Commonwealth Citizens Consultative Committee.
  • Oxford Committee for Racial Integration.
  • Slough International Friendship Council.
  • Wolverhampton Council for Racial Harmony.
Four other committees have recently advertised for full-time officers and another four will be doing so shortly. Ten committees are currently negotiating with their local authorities and the National Committee.

In addition, many local authorities themselves employ full-time officers with special responsibility for immigrants.
