§ Mr. Oakesasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what plans he has for encouraging joint projects in oceanographical research with other European countries.
§ Mr. Goronwy RobertsBritish oceanographers and fisheries scientists have for long played a leading part in a number of international organisations as members of their governing bodies and as Chairman of their scientific committees and working groups. These organisations include the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea, and Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research, the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of U.N.E.S.C.O., the Food and Agriculture Organisation, and a large number of working groups.
The U.K. takes an active part in the Oceanographic Sub-Committee of the N.A.T.O. Science Committee, and there are frequent exchanges of scientists with European countries.
The National Institute of Oceanography is making equipment for international use with international funds.
No opportunity of collaborating with European countries in this field is lost.
